NMH Coffee Morning in aid of World prematurity day on November 17th
Ferdy and I went along to Holles Street Hospital to show our support for all the families who have had little premature babies.
Lots of past patients were at the event and it was great to see them all thriving. Some of the babies are worse affected than others. I was chatting to Mary Brosnan, Mary is the director of midwifery and nursing at the national maternity hospital. I asked why one of he babies who looked about 6 months still had breathing tubes. She was telling me how some babies go on to be completely healthy with no after affects but that some of them can have problems like collapsed lungs or very underdeveloped lungs. Some of them can be oxygen dependent for months after birth.
These little babies fight extra hard to make it in the world. They have to fight off infection and fight just to maintain their body temperatures. I know it must be so hard for new parents and for the nurses looking after them to see them fighting so hard but Mary said you just get on with it. They don’t stop to think about the situation because they are too busy looking after the babies and just concentrating on what the next step is.
After having my own baby who was born at a healthy 7lbs 14oz I cant imagine a baby being born only 557grams, Mary told us one of the little girls had only been that weight when she was born. It is truly amazing that they are such little fighters and to see them happy, healthy and playing away as if their battle for life is forgotten.
It was such a positive day and so encouraging and supportive to see all the parents with their gorgeous healthy babies who have come so far. Ferdy had a ball playing with all the other kids and learning to share!
